Plants to Create a Jungle Vibe

Creating the indoor jungle of your dreams is attainable with one simple step- plants, plants, anddd more plants. You can create this luscious look no matter how small or large your home is by including trailing vines, hanging plants, or larger statement pieces. Amping up the island feel to your decor is as easy finding the right greenery for your space.

1. Pothos (Epipremnum Pinnatum)

With numerous options in the Pothos family, this species offers a variety of shapes and colors to choose from. The Satin Pothos is one of the faster growing and vining plants that is perfect to trail throughout your walls if you have limited space or simply enjoy the look of them. Luckily for us, this plant is also low maintenance and great for people who are just beginning their plant journey.

1Pothos Man

Layering different types of this species (Marble Queen, Neon, and Golden Pothos) will provide the bright tropical look without having to break the bank. The Pothos is nicknamed “Devil’s ivy” because it can survive in low light and is a bit more forgiving when left unwatered. Not only is the Pothos among the easiest, but also purifies the air in our homes eliminating carbon monoxide in the air. You can create your jungle dreams and improve your health all at once! Hooray!

2. Philodendron Rojo Congo

The Philodendron Rojo is a plant that alters colors throughout its growth. With stark ruby red leaves changing to burgundy green throughout its lifespan, this plant grows wide and will need proper space to show off its exuberant foliage. These majestic plants make for a great option for those who have a bit more room given that it is not a vining or climbing plant. The Rojo Congo will grow with warmer temperatures and lots of bright indirect light (closer to the window is preferred- but not touching the window or it may burn!).

3. Monstera Deliciosa

The third (and my personal favorite) plant to create a lush decor is the Monstera Deliciosa. This is a perfect statement piece to draw a dramatic and tropical accent to your space. This plant is also low maintenance and will flourish in bright indirect light. The Monstera Deliciosa naturally likes to grow on trees, and will grow larger if given a moss pole or stake to depend on. The unique holes and slits of the Monstera truly embodies the ethereal feel of our beloved tropics.

4. Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai)

The Bird of Paradise is the quintessential item to have if you want to spark the jungle atmosphere. This plant comes in many sizes so it makes for a great option if you have a smaller home to include a smaller tropical silhouette. The B.O.P will tolerate medium light, but naturally desires to be closer to the sun for at least four hours per day. You will notice your plant has split leaves if it is unhappier and will have to trim them overtime (and perhaps move it to a more fitting space). If you happen to have a porch or a balcony, you can opt to place this plant outside.

Unlike the Rojo Congo, the B.O.P prefers to have a slightly moist soil in between waterings. This plant may begin to grow unevenly (leaning toward the light) so be sure to rotate your plant to encourage balanced growth.

5. Colocasia (Elephant ear)

The variety of Colocasia named Elephant ear plant is a fast grower and will need to be given ample space to expand in its container. The large and curved shape of this plant’s foliage provides for a figure reminiscent of the jungle, hence the nickname ‘elephant ear’!

This plant will desire a bright window with humidity. You can ensure your Colocasia is given more humidity by placing the pot between a layer of pebbles or rocks.

6. Kentia palm (howea forsteriana)

The Kentia Palm embodies the natural curve of silhouette of our favorite island trees. This plant will tolerate medium light and is a great option for beginners. You will want to keep this plant in a more humid room to mimic its natural environment. To keep your plant’s foliage looking fresh, be sure to wipe down your Kentia palm fronds as they will eventually collect dust. This plant can easily be used as a statement piece in your home when creating your oasis. If you find a plant that enjoys humidity- chances are it will add to your tropical array!
